Nature reserves & national parks

In Norrbotten, there are 386 nature reserves and eight national parks, with 25 nature reserves and one national park located in Arjeplog. A nature reserve is a way to protect valuable nature and provide areas for outdoor recreation.

The 25 nature reserves in the municipality vary greatly in size and character. Two of them are also the largest nature reserves in both the county and the country: Hornavan-Sädvajaure mountain forest and Laisdalen mountain forest.

You can find more information about Arjeplog’s nature reserves on the County Administrative Board’s website. Just search for “Arjeplog” on their website to learn more.

Pieljekaise National Park, located in the Arjeplog Mountains between Jäckvik and Adolfström in the Semisjaur-Njarg Sami village, is a mountainous area known for its rich flora in the birch forested areas. The national park is worth visiting year-round, offering hiking opportunities in the summer and skiing in the winter.

Pieljekaise National Park is easily accessible via the Kungsleden trail from Jäckvik or Adolfström. Along the trail, there are shelters, an open cabin with a fireplace, and Pieljekaisestugan with two rooms. One room in Pieljekaisestugan is always open as a shelter for day visitors. The other room is a locked four-bed room, and you can borrow the key from the store in Jäckvik or Adolfströms Handelsbod, but always call ahead.

Nature reserves are the most common way to protect natural areas, formed to preserve biodiversity, conserve valuable natural environments, or meet the need for outdoor recreational areas. When planning a visit to a nature reserve or national park, it’s important to be aware that the right of public access (allemansrätten) may have specific regulations in the area. Sometimes these regulations are stricter, for example, limiting camping to specific areas or allowing extended stays.
